Nelson, at age 35, was wounded in combat losing an eye at Corsica. At age 40, he lost most of one arm in an attempt to conquer Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
At age 47, during the Napoleonic Wars, Nelson was fatally wounded by a French sharpshooter at the'Battle of Trafalgar' on 21st October 1805 in which the British Fleet defeated the combined French and Spanish fleets. Nelson was shot just before the end of the battle, but lasted long enough to be told that the British Fleet and his Navy were victorious.
This incredible victory against the odds ensured that the Royal Navy would indeed'rule the waves' for the next 150 years and Napoleon's plans to invade Great Britain sunk with his navy at Cape Trafalgar. Trafalgar was preceded by another disastrous defeat for the French Navy at the hands of Nelson who inflicted an earlier savage defeat on the French Navy at the Battle of the Nile in 1798.
