Antique Victorian Pot Lid : Very Rare Variant : "Burgess's Anchovy Paste". Although the lion comes in lots of guises, this appears to be the only one where it takes on a purely human face. Is this a caricature of the engraver, the owner or a famous patron? We think it looks a little bit like Prince Albert (see photo, died 1861) or a young Edward VII (crowned 1901). Was the company trying to solicit a royal warrant? It did get one from Edward VII during his rein, but this lid has Victoria's crown. It's an interesting theory. Has anyone else got an example of this version?

This one has, unfortunately, been in two halves at one time and been glued back together, although you wouldn't notice when looking at it casually, it's a hairline crack. Apart from that it's in great shape. Like most of our antique bottles and pot lids, this item has spent at least 100 years underground.
