A VERY RARE 1919 edition of??????? (Abroad) by Ukrainian poet Oleksandr Oles. This is an excellent condition copy of this VERY RARE publication. Originally published in Ukrainian as. Seventh volume of poetry by prominent Ukrainian modernist poet Oleksandr Oles. The collection marks a tragic milestone in the poet's life and career. It is Oles' very first book written and published after he fled Ukraine in February 1919 to escape the advancing Bolshevik forces. Leaving behind his wife and his son (the future famous poet Oleh Olzhych), Oles poured his intense loneliness, home-sickness, and anxiety for his occupied homeland into these verses. The book's overarching mood is one of profound isolation, grief, and "sweet suffering" while longing for Ukraine. One of its most famous opening poems begins with the melancholic line. In exile, days flow like tears... Oleksandr Oles (pseudonym of Oleksandr Kandyba). The original rare edition consisted of 96 pages. Trizna was a Ukrainian engineer who emigrated to Australia in the 1950's to work on the Snowy Mountains Hydro Electric scheme, and these books are from his personal library.
