Very rare first edition of Haemstedius' Martyr's History, printed by Jacobus Savry in Dordrecht, the Netherlands, 1657, richly illustrated with 150 powerful copper engravings. The original book dates from 1559. In 1604 a print appeared in which woodcuts appeared for the first time.

This was followed by a series of editions by Jacobus Savry. In 1657, the first copy of a series of 44 reprints from the aforementioned series was published - In b. Eautiful condition - in full. Blind-stamped leather folio binding - illustrated with more than 150 powerful copper-engravings and fine initials!!

The preliminary part of the book exhaustively discusses the pride of the Popes with an admonition to the government and a warning to the Christian reader. Sublime book, lacks only printer's page, 1st page foreword, last leaf register, otherwise complete, compact, clean & fresh. You will not easily come across the 1657 edition - 32 x 21 x 8 cm. Full leather binding, blind stamped in accordance to the original. Original title in Dutch : Adriaan Cornelisz.

First edition of the Book of Martyrs, drawn from the work of Van Haemstede and compiled and supplemented by Gysius and Bruin.

Illustrated with 152 numbered engravings. The engravings all measure 14 x 11 cm.

From 1652, Savry worked in Dordrecht from "'t Kasteel van Gendt" as the publisher of various editions of the Book of Martyrs and the works of Flavius Josephus.
